Alumni-Choir
The Alumni Choir of Universität Hamburg, founded in 2014 out of the university’s choir, is a mixed choir in which alumni, members, and guests of Universität Hamburg make music together with music enthusiasts from the wider community.
In December 2020, Felix Renner succeeded Lea Wolpert as conductor. Felix Renner studied music in Lübeck and Weimar with a focus on “choral conducting” and “music education” and has collaborated with numerous choirs ranging from children’s and amateur ensembles to professional groups.
The choir’s musical emphasis is primarily on classical music, but it also enjoys surprising its audience with “excursions” into other genres. Its repertoire, often a cappella, includes works from the 16th century, such as “Je l´aime bien” by Orlando di Lasso (1532–1594), as well as music from the Romantic era and contemporary composers like Arvo Pärt (*1935) and Eric Whitacre (*1970). The choir also enjoys performing together with other ensembles, such as those of the university’s music program—for example, in 2018 with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” or in 2020, shortly before the first COVID lockdown, with Duke Ellington’s “Sacred Concerts” in collaboration with the Skyliner Big Band. The choir also gladly accepts invitations to smaller performances, such as at the 2019 University Ball or the Choral Festival ChinaTime.
Currently, the choir consists of around 40 members and is constantly evolving. It is therefore looking to strengthen its ranks, particularly in the male voice sections.
